You crawl over to the hole. It's been dug crudely and is as wide as a city manhole. It's deep and the bottom is swallowed in darkness. The wooden ladder is visibly old and doesn't appear to be fixed to the interior wall in any safe fashion.
You know you aren't next to this for no reason. You remind yourself that you never did like Alice in Wonderland. The field extends beyond the horizon. Who knows what could be out there or even how long before there is something.
